For decades, cranberry juice was dismissed as folk medicine for urinary tract infections. Then researchers identified the actual mechanism — and it turns out the folk wisdom was correct, but for entirely different reasons than people thought.
Cranberries don't make urine "more acidic" (that was the old theory and it's essentially wrong). What cranberries actually do is contain proanthocyanidins — specifically a structural variant called Type-A PACs — that physically block E. coli bacteria from adhering to the bladder wall.
Bacteria don't cause infection by floating in fluid — they cause infection by attaching to tissue and multiplying there. The fimbriae (tiny hair-like projections) on E. coli have specific receptors that bind to mannose sugars on the bladder wall.
Type-A PACs from cranberries bind to those fimbriae and block the receptors. The bacteria can't attach. Without attachment, they're flushed out in normal urine flow before they can colonize. No infection forms.
Antibiotics kill bacteria that have already attached and colonized. Each course of antibiotics also damages the broader gut microbiome and creates selection pressure for antibiotic resistance.
Cranberry PACs prevent attachment in the first place. Bacteria cannot develop resistance to being physically prevented from binding — there's no biological pressure to adapt to. This is why cranberry supplementation is such a powerful preventative tool, especially for pets prone to recurring UTIs.
Quantified PAC content. Most cranberry supplements don't verify their PAC levels. Therapeutic effect requires a specific dose — usually around 36 mg of PACs daily. Cranimals tests every batch for PAC content.
Type-A PAC verified. Cranberries contain both Type-A and Type-B PACs but only Type-A has the anti-adhesion effect. Cranimals confirms Type-A levels specifically.
Works for cats and dogs. The mechanism is identical across species. Particularly important for cats with recurring FLUTD where antibiotic cycles damage the urinary microbiome long-term.
For active UTI: Cranimals + Adored Beast Easy Peesy II (for soothing inflamed bladder mucosa) + plenty of moisture in the diet (raw food or wet food).
For prevention: Cranimals daily + raw or wet food diet + adequate hydration. Particularly important for senior cats and dogs with any history of UTI.
