Switching to raw is the single biggest nutritional decision you can make for your pet. But raw food alone — even rotational raw — has gaps. Modern soil depletion, the omega-3 ratio of factory-raised animals, and the limits of single-species feeding all create predictable nutritional deficits. The supplement stack below is what we genuinely consider essential at Barks N Purrs — not what we want to upsell, but what fills the real gaps.
A common myth in raw feeding circles is "raw is complete, you don't need anything else." This is partially true and partially marketing. The reality:
What raw food does brilliantly:
• Bioavailable protein with naturally preserved amino acids
• True 70% moisture for kidney and bladder health
• Live digestive enzymes (destroyed by extrusion in kibble)
• Naturally occurring vitamins in food-form (not synthetic)
• Properly balanced calcium-phosphorus when bone is included
• Significantly lower glycemic load than any kibble
Where raw still has gaps:
• Omega-3 ratio. Wild prey contained roughly 1:1 omega-6 to omega-3. Factory-farmed protein animals (even ethically raised ones) eat grain-based diets and end up with omega-6 to omega-3 ratios closer to 20:1. Raw food alone delivers excellent protein but rarely optimal omega-3.
• Soil depletion. Farmed meat is raised on feed rather than forage, so its trace-mineral content varies from batch to batch and tends to run lower in iodine, selenium and manganese than wild prey. Even good raw cannot promise what the farm did not supply; a small daily mineral top-up covers the gap that industrial agriculture subtracted.
• Single-protein limitation. Even rotating 4 proteins, you're missing the variety wild canids and felids consumed (whole prey including stomach contents, organs, and the seasonal eating patterns that delivered different nutrients across the year).
• Microbiome diversity. Domestic environments lack the microbial diversity wild ancestors encountered. Raw food supports microbiome health but a clinical-grade probiotic accelerates and deepens that effect.
• Immune training. Wild canids and felids consumed medicinal plants and fungi seasonally. Domestic pets rarely encounter these. Adding back what evolution included.
The supplement stack below isn't about replacing raw — it's about completing what raw alone can't fully deliver in a modern environment.
If you're feeding raw and only buy three supplements, these are the three. Every pet, every age, every life stage.
#1 — Carino Pets Omega 3 with DPA (Harp Seal Oil)
Why it's essential: Marine omega-3 is the single most under-supplied nutrient in modern raw diets. Harp seal oil contains DPA (docosapentaenoic acid) — the only omega-3 that converts bidirectionally to both EPA and DHA, giving the body precisely what it needs at any moment. DPA is found in negligible amounts in fish oil but abundantly in seal oil.
What it does: Anti-inflammatory across every body system — joints, skin, brain, heart, gut. The most consistently observed benefit in our customers: visible coat improvement within 2-3 weeks.
How to use: Daily, on every meal, for life. Available in 250 mL, 500 mL, and 1,000 mL sizes. Dose by the maker's chart: roughly ¼ to ½ tsp a day under 5 kg, ½ to 1 tsp to 10 kg, 1 to 2 tsp to 25 kg, 2 to 3 tsp above that, starting at half for the first few days. Product of Canada. Refrigerate after opening.
#2 — A Daily Probiotic
Why it's essential: Gut microbiome diversity is the single biggest predictor of immune health, allergy resistance, and longevity. Raw food supports the microbiome — a clinical probiotic accelerates and deepens what raw begins.
Two equally good options at Barks N Purrs:
• Adored Beast Love Bugs — A 14-strain probiotic. The most diverse formulation in mainstream pet retail. Critical for any pet with allergy history, recent antibiotic use, or transitioning from kibble.
• Big Country Raw Goat Milk — Raw fermented goat milk, 10-day cultured, never pasteurized. Naturally contains beneficial probiotics plus tryptophan (calming amino acid). Often the best starter probiotic for transitioning pets — it's food, not a supplement, so palatability is never an issue.
How to use: Daily. Start at half-dose for the first 5 days to let the gut adjust. Many customers use Goat Milk daily for life and add Love Bugs during stress events (post-antibiotic, after vaccinations, during transitions).
#3 — A Greens & Trace Mineral Foundation
Why it's essential: Modern agricultural soil is depleted of trace minerals compared to 50 years ago. Even perfectly raw-fed pets have measurably lower mineral status than they would have a generation ago. Greens and sea vegetables fill the gap and add phytonutrients pets rarely get otherwise.
Two equally good options at Barks N Purrs:
• Carnivora Earth Greens ($26.99) — Spirulina, chlorella, and kelp combination. Replicates the green prey-stomach contents wild canids and felids ate when they consumed herbivores. Biologically appropriate supplementation.
• Adored Beast Soil & Sea — Combines sea minerals with traditional herbs. Slightly different angle than Earth Greens (more emphasis on traditional herbal additions). Works just as well for the foundation purpose.
How to use: Daily, on food. Start at half-dose for first week to let the digestive system adapt to the increased fibre and mineral load.
Once the 3 must-haves are in place, these are the next two we strongly recommend layering in. Especially for senior pets, at-risk breeds, and anyone optimizing for longevity.
#4 — Mushroom Super Immune Blend
Why it's recommended: Medicinal mushrooms are the most underutilized tool in pet wellness. Turkey Tail has more peer-reviewed research supporting its use in immune modulation than almost any other natural compound. Reishi has 2,000+ years of documented use for cardiovascular and immune support.
What we carry: Head to Tail Super Immune Blend (Manitoba-made) — Turkey Tail + Lion's Mane + Cordyceps + Red Reishi, all hot-water extracted from 100% organic fruiting bodies (not the cheaper mycelium-on-grain alternatives).
Why this matters more for some pets: Senior dogs, high-immune-need breeds (Golden Retrievers, Boxers, Bernese Mountain Dogs), pets recovering from illness, and pets with autoimmune conditions are the ones whose owners report the most from it (with the vet in the loop for autoimmune cases). For young, healthy pets it is optional. From age 7 we suggest it.
How to use: Daily, mixed in food. Effects compound over 4-6 weeks; benefits build slowly but durably.
#5 — A Trace Mineral Booster
Why it's recommended: The greens layer (Earth Greens or Soil & Sea) covers the basics. The trace mineral booster fills the deeper micronutrient gaps that virtually no commercial or raw diet contains adequately — vanadium, germanium, molybdenum, B5, B12, GLA omega-6.
What we carry: Carnivora Earth Origins ($24.99) — Saskatchewan-made. Specifically formulated to fill what even Earth Greens leaves behind.
Particularly important for: Pets with any chronic condition involving liver function, immune function, or cellular energy production. Senior pets. Pets with serious health diagnoses (alongside veterinary care).
How to use: Daily. Pairs cleanly with Earth Greens — same brand, same intent, complementary coverage.
Daily Raw Stack (Must-Haves):
✅ Carino Pets Omega 3 with DPA (Harp Seal Oil)
✅ Adored Beast Love Bugs OR BCR Goat Milk
✅ Carnivora Earth Greens OR Adored Beast Soil & Sea
Daily Raw Stack (Optimized):
✅ All 3 Must-Haves above
⭐ Head to Tail Super Immune Blend
⭐ Carnivora Earth Origins
Beyond the core stack, certain conditions or life stages warrant adding specific supplements. We assess these one-at-a-time during in-store consultation, but here's the general framework:
For joint issues or large-breed prevention: Green Lipped Mussel (private label, Winnipeg) or Adored Beast Jump for JOYnts. Add Tri-Acta H.A. for diagnosed senior arthritis. Pair with Pawtanical CBD for active pain management.
For chronic gut issues or transitions: Adored Beast Healthy Gut (enzymes + probiotics) or Adored Beast Gut Soothe (intestinal repair). Both pair beautifully with the daily Love Bugs.
For seniors (cognitive support): Head to Tail Lion's Mane Cognitive Support Blend. Effects compound over 4-6 weeks; meaningful change typically visible by week 6.
For allergies and skin issues: Head to Tail Skin Support Mushroom Blend (Tremella + Reishi). Add Adored Beast Yeasty Beast Protocol if yeast is suspected (itchy paws, ear infections, "Frito feet").
For UTI history or FLUTD: Cranimals daily. Add Adored Beast Easy Peesy II during active flare-ups.
For serious health challenges or autoimmune conditions: Adored Beast Vital Defense + Turkey Tail Tincture + Chaga Tincture. The integrative immune support protocol. Always coordinate with your veterinarian or veterinary specialist.
For anxiety, arthritis pain, or seizures: Pawtanical PawDaily (CBD) — sized to your pet's weight, Cornell-research-backed for arthritis and seizure support.
The 3 must-haves represent a genuine ongoing cost — but we'd rather be honest about that than pretend it's free. For a medium dog (40 lbs):
• Seal Oil — roughly $1-2 per day depending on size purchased
• Probiotic (Love Bugs or Goat Milk) — roughly $0.50-1 per day
• Greens — roughly $0.50 per day
Total: about $2-3.50 per day for the core raw stack. For context: that's less than the difference between premium kibble and grocery-store kibble. The supplement stack is one of the highest-leverage longevity investments you can make.
If budget is tight: start with Seal Oil alone. It's the single highest-impact supplement. Then add the probiotic when you can. Then greens. The order matters less than getting started.
If you're new to raw feeding and want help building your stack, our team will walk you through the whole thing in person. We'll size each supplement to your pet, talk through dosing, and answer your questions honestly — including telling you when something isn't needed.
