Pet Valu Performatrin / Prime: what is in it, and what we would feed instead

Made in Canada — Pet Valu exclusive · Pet Valu

Our take

Made in Canada counts for something, and the Ultra and Prime lines are decent kibble. They are still extruded kibble, and the grain-free ones lean on peas and lentils.

What the label says

Pet Valu's house brands (Performatrin, Performatrin Ultra, Prime, Pure) are mid-tier kibble at lower price points than premium brands. The Ultra and Prime lines have notably better ingredient profiles than the standard Performatrin — but all four are still extruded kibble with the format ceiling that comes with that.

What is in it
  • Extruded at high heat, like every kibble
  • Most owners feed one formula for years
  • Grain-free options use the legume-heavy pattern from the FDA's 2019 report
  • Pea protein boosts the protein number on the label
  • Processed, whatever the country of origin
What fresh gives back
  • Whole, named protein
  • Moisture in the food (raw is about 70% water; kibble about 10%)
  • Protein rotation
  • No starch binder
  • Fresh fats and omega-3s

House-brand house-rules: Performatrin's "Ultra" line uses better protein sources but adds peas, lentils and chickpeas in the top five ingredients. That is the legume-heavy pattern the FDA described in its 2019 DCM report. The FDA never established a cause and stopped public updates in 2022, but it is worth knowing what you are feeding.
