On a prescription diet? Here is what we do, and what we don't.
Royal Canin Veterinary, Hill's Prescription Diet, Purina Pro Plan Veterinary, Rayne · Prescribed by your vet
Our take
If your vet prescribed a diet, we do not talk you off it from a quiz. What we do is help with the things that fit around it, and give you the questions to ask your vet if you would like to explore a fresh diet that hits the same targets.
What the label says
Prescription diets (urinary, kidney, liver, pancreatitis, hydrolyzed, gastrointestinal) are formulated to hit specific numbers: minerals, urine pH, phosphorus, fat, protein. The ingredient lists often look like ordinary kibble, and that is not the point; the numbers are. Whether a fresh diet can hit the same numbers is a conversation with your vet, not a swap.
- Formulated for a diagnosis, so it is doing a specific job
- Changing it without the vet can undo the reason it was prescribed
- Many are built on by-product meal, rice and corn, which is not the point of them
- Some are elimination tools (hydrolyzed, single protein), where a fresh single-protein diet can be discussed
- Omega-3 that fits alongside almost any therapeutic diet
- A probiotic during and after antibiotics
- Questions to bring to the next vet visit
- A fresh option only if the vet agrees to a supervised trial
Bring these to the vet: What are the targets this diet is hitting? Could a fresh diet formulated to those targets work, with a recheck in six weeks? If it is an elimination diet, can we run the elimination on one whole protein instead?
The switch at Barks N Purrs
Nothing changes until your vet says so. Omega-3 (seal oil) and a probiotic are the two additions that fit alongside most therapeutic diets; bring the list to your vet first. If the diet is an elimination tool for skin or gut, ask whether a supervised trial on one whole novel protein is an option.
