Purina Pro Plan: what is in it, and what we would feed instead
Sport, Focus, Sensitive Skin, Savor · PetSmart, Pet Valu (owned by Nestlé Purina)
Our take
Pro Plan is one of the better mass-market kibbles, with real research behind it. It is still built on by-product meal, corn gluten and rice, and it is still kibble.
What the label says
Purina Pro Plan is one of the better mass-market kibbles: Purina invests in research and has real quality control. Many formulas still use poultry by-product meal as a main protein source, with rice and corn gluten meal in the top five.
- Owned by Nestlé (Nestlé Purina)
- Poultry by-product meal carries much of the protein
- Corn gluten meal and brewers rice
- Artificial colours in some lines
- One protein, every day, for years
- Whole, named protein
- Moisture in the food (raw is about 70% water; kibble about 10%)
- Protein rotation
- No starch binder
- Fresh fats and omega-3s
Watch the order: Many Pro Plan recipes list chicken first, then rice, corn gluten meal and poultry by-product meal. The chicken is weighed wet (mostly water), so once you account for the moisture, the corn gluten and the by-product meal are carrying much of the protein.
The switch at Barks N Purrs
SMACK dehydrated raw (Winnipeg-made) keeps the scoop-and-feed convenience with a real step up in ingredients. Perfectly Raw or Big Country Raw is the full move.
