Canadian Naturals: what is in it, and what we would feed instead
Original, Grain-Free, Limited Ingredient, Value Series · Independents, Pet Planet, Global Pet Foods — Abbotsford, BC
Our take
A Canadian family company with a clean record, making a decent kibble. Peas at number two is the honest caveat.
What the label says
Canadian Naturals is a Canadian-owned, family-run brand from Abbotsford, BC, with no recall we could find. It is still extruded kibble, and many of the formulas list peas as ingredient #2, the legume-heavy pattern the FDA described in its 2019 DCM report.
- Still extruded kibble, with the same limits as any dry food
- Peas appear as ingredient #2 in many formulas, the legume-heavy pattern from the FDA's 2019 report
- Grain-free lines are built on legumes
- Pea protein lifts the protein number on the label
- Most owners feed one formula long-term
- Cat formulas are still around 30% carbohydrate
- Whole, named protein
- Moisture in the food (raw is about 70% water; kibble about 10%)
- Protein rotation
- No starch binder
- Fresh fats and omega-3s
Peas at #2 flag: When peas sit right after the main protein, the recipe is functionally legume-heavy and part of the label's protein is plant protein. The FDA never established a cause for the DCM reports and stopped public updates in 2022, but this is the pattern it described.
The switch at Barks N Purrs
Canadian Naturals customers already prioritize Canadian sourcing. Perfectly Raw (Manitoba) or Big Country Raw (Ontario) is the fresh version; SMACK keeps the dry format; COEVO FD+K (also BC) is the hybrid.
