Open Farm: what is in it, and what we would feed instead
Goodbowl, Ancient Grains, RawMix, Kind Earth · Pet Valu, independents, openfarmpet.com — Toronto, Canada
Our take
Open Farm's traceability is real and we like the company. Kibble is kibble, though, and at Open Farm prices fresh raw is often the same money per day.
What the label says
Open Farm has done something almost no other kibble brand has: full ingredient traceability through a lot-code system, so you can look up where each protein came from. The ethical sourcing is real. The format is still extruded kibble, and cooking is cooking however well-sourced the ingredients are.
- Still extruded high-heat kibble
- Premium pricing approaches fresh raw cost per day
- Single-protein formulas in some lines limit rotation
- Grain-free RawMix recipes use the legume-heavy pattern from the FDA's 2019 report
- The freeze-dried coating on RawMix is a small fraction of the bag by weight
- Kind Earth insect and plant recipes are a sustainability choice first
- Whole, named protein
- Moisture in the food (raw is about 70% water; kibble about 10%)
- Protein rotation
- No starch binder
- Fresh fats and omega-3s
Premium pricing reality: Open Farm's per-day cost approaches fresh raw in many cases. If you are already paying premium kibble prices for Canadian sourcing, fresh raw gives you more food and less starch for the same money.
The switch at Barks N Purrs
Open Farm customers already care about sourcing, which is exactly who does best on fresh raw. Big Country Raw (made in Ontario) or Perfectly Raw (Manitoba) for the full move; SMACK if you want to keep the dry format; COEVO FD+K for a BC-made hybrid.
Website prices on 2026-09-26. Cost per day is a starting estimate at 2.5% of body weight for an adult dog; your plan uses your pet's real weight and age.
